Your Political Kitchen host produced this video to open his on-stage review of the Iowa Caucuses at the Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines on January 6, 2008. The live show featured a typical PK cooking segment Campaign Waffles. With the added dimension of audience heckling during the bit, which was great fun, I am exploring the possibility of taping web features at a theatre in front of a live crowd.

The montage video was a rousing hit at the theatre. However, there is one part of the video that is disappointing. As Barack Obama is making his victory speech and saying, Unity over division, MSNBC went to a cutaway showing Mad Money host Jim Cramer. This was no accident. Shamefully, NBC used this historic moment to punch up a visual to promote a CNBC program. Pathetic. But aside from MSNBC forcing us to see Jim Cramers face during Obamas speech, the video is really cool. Enjoy.

Political Kitchen is coming back December 3rd. It’s been a bummer for me not to be able to produce segments largely due to an ex-wife situation. Enough said. Not going there.

The past few weeks I’ve been scouting some friends’ kitchens where I would have more space to work and the ability to shoot reversal shots to improve the overall production. Fortunately, there are some that will not just let me in their home, they say they will let me use their kitchen. I’ll see where I’m at after they ask the wife.

I’m grateful that occasionally I’ll get calls from media people about PK. Political Kitchen was unexpectedly featured in a story syndicated nationally by Gannett. And, PK was considered at Food Network, where their development people are very very nice by the way. They ended up discussing whether airing political content was appropriate for their lifestyle network. They told me they had never seen a recipe show like the PK demo they had in their hands. An FBI agent having constitutional issues with a piece of steak! “That’s different,” they said. Their decision to not develop a PK show was very sensible. Yes, something I say in the political content, even if non-partisan, could alienate some of the millions of viewers who tune in looking for an adventure with food. Good concept. Wrong forum.

More recently, public television called. I wrote and we shot, in Hi-Def, two really cool segments explaining how the Democrat and GOP caucuses work in Iowa. The Democrat segment takes an extremely complicated process and makes it understandable. In the end there’s a mash-up, but not the typical vlog variety. The GOP segment takes a process that is no big deal, Republicans just show up and vote, and adds an edge that’s very creative, a lot of fun, and a bit out there.

Our schedule called for doing Republican bit first. And, dammit, it was just too different. I was canned from the show my work was supposed to air on. Unfortunately, some people, even nice people, just don’t get it. The idea here is that if you make politics fun and draw them to the process by being creative, that really is a good thing.

So, thank God for alternative media. I’ll keep you updated on the availability of those very well produced election pieces, on-line, not on air. And, I’ll keep you updated regarding my return to posting new videos weekly.

Again, I want to thank all of you who have watched my work on-line and have told others about PoliticalKitchen.com. Despite the fact I had to go on hiatus, site traffic has continued to be strong. Thank you.

Have a very happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Bob Singer

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has released what she calls “A New Direction For America,” an outline of Democratic party talking points, goodies, and strategy for taking back control of Congress in November. Pelosi and the Democrats pepper Bob Singer as he speaks about some of the details in the document.

How crude is that in this high-tech era? Musician Kent Johnson of the Grassy Knolls (www.thegrassyknolls.com) deserves credit, not just for his guitar playing, but for also listening to Bob sing live in his basement. Cameraman Mike Sims also deserves to be recognized for all his time and the excellent work he’s donated to Political Kitchen since May. Have a great weekend everyone, and thank you for watching PoliticalKitchen.com.
